The theory test was first introduced in July 1996 as a written multiple choice test and replaced the section on the driving test were the examiner would ask the candidiate a number of questions relating to the highway code. The theory test was updated to a computer based test on the 4th January 2000 where the candidate would use a touch screen to input the correct answers.

The hazard perception test was first introduced as part of the theory test in November 2002.
