Starting to Learn to Drive
Before you can start learning to drive, you must hold a valid signed provisional driving licence before you drive on a public road. The minimum age for a UK provisional licence is 17. If you need to apply for your provisional licence you will need the correct forms and identification. We have all the neccessary information needed to apply in this section. Licences are obtained by the dvla which handle all licence applications. There is also information on taking driving lessons and finding a good quality driving school and examples of the type of questions you should ask when making first contact with driving schools. Many driving schools agree to abide by the adi code of practice a copy of this can be found in this section. There's also a handy driving lesson calculator to give you an estimate of how many driving lessons you will need in total.
After you have had a few driving lessons and you feel quite confident, we recommend you should have some private practice with friends or family, this can give your driving skills and confidence a boost, we have included some helpful hints and tips on teaching someone how to drive and certain rules which apply.
If you find driving a car with manual gears too challenging don't worry you can learn to drive in a car that has automatic transmission. If you take your driving test in an automatic you may only drive an automatic after you pass your test. So if you do find driving a manual car too challenging then learning in an automatic may be an option.
